Desk Organization

I am a wife, a mother to a thirteen year old teenager, also a mother to an autistic ten year old and a preschool teacher. With so many things to do in so little time, I always plan and organize my day. It has now become second nature to me. Many things in my life have a system or a routine. But even for those who are not believers of routine, you will agree that with a routine and system, you can get more things done.

Did you know that many people (even dedicated workers) never get their task completed in time, due to poor desk organization.Yes, you get out of your house on time, and yes you are seated at your desk to start work.  But at the end of the day, you wonder where all that time went.

Every once in a while, I find much clutter and start to re-organize my desk. So today, I am getting to it, if you are like me, these pointers will help you to.

1. get a desk
If you have the luxury of space, get yourself a desk that will suit both your style and budget. Also don't forget the amount of space that you have. IKEA has pretty reasonable desk at very good prices. Recently I discovered a shop at the NEX Shopping Center called Wong & Wong. They have such beautiful vintage style pieces.

2. know your own style
What type of a worker are you? Do you like to pile things up? Do you like to spread things out? This is important that help you decide what type of table you will need.

3. comfort is key
If you are not comfortable with the table, trust me you will not use it. I once had a table that I never really like, and I ended up using my huge dinning table instead.

4. know when you work best
If you work well/ most at night then, you may want to station your desk near a powerpoint for the light feature. Otherwise you may want it near a window for good ventilation and light.

Now getting to the stuff on the table. When I was a principal of a preschool years back, I was able to direct my teachers to the forms in my office, without eve being there. With proper organization, all your things will be quick to assess. What are the things that I would encourage you to have:-

  1. a calender (definitely, no matter how advance in IT you may be, a tangible calender will always come in handy)
  2. computer/ laptop
  3. printer/ scanner
  4. laminating machine (important for teachers like me)
  5. telephone
  6. handphone charger
  7. a clock
  8. notepads
  9. checkbook
  10. accounts materials
  11. mail holder
  12. stationery holder (with all the stuff you need)
  13. blank books (I love pretty books)
  14. extra files (also love pretty files)
  15. a bulletin board (a size that's right for you)
  16. drawers (optional, for people like me, it's a must have. I can segregate and label them too)
  17. trashcan below
Now I am off to tidy up my desk. Chao!
